FAQs
How does Missionary Artisans work?
Our model is designed to support artisans in developing communities with dignity and sustainability:
1. Identifying Artisans: We partner with talented artisans and artisan groups in developing countries who create beautiful, handcrafted goods.
2. Supporting Their Work: We pay artisans fair, upfront prices for their products—and in some cases, offer small donations to help cover startup material costs.
3. Managing Sales: We handle logistics and shipping to our base in Pittsburgh, then sell the items online and at in-person events.
4. Creating Stability: Our goal is to build recurring revenue streams that help artisans escape poverty and achieve long-term self-sufficiency.
5. Telling Their Story: We proudly share the stories behind each artisan and their culture, highlighting the beauty and meaning behind their work.
6. Powered by Volunteers: Our mission is run entirely by volunteers—for now. Eventually, we hope to employ adults with disabilities to help package and ship products.
Where do the Products Come From?
Our crafts come from mission-driven communities worldwide. We feature Mustard Seed Pottery, handmade by adults with disabilities in Jamaica; vibrant Mochilas, woven by Indigenous women in Colombia with Malteser International; and rosaries crafted by sex trafficking survivors, learning a skill with the Catholic Mary Queen of Heaven Missionaries in the Philippines and Los Angeles. Shop these faith-filled creations and stay tuned!
How do you select worthy artisan projects?
We seek artisan projects that are rooted in Catholic faith and creativity, with strong potential for sustainable success. We especially value work that is reflective of the beautiful culture where it originates. While we welcome all worthy projects, we give special consideration to initiatives that empower adults with disabilities. Our goal is to partner with missions that not only produce beautiful handmade goods but also uplift their communities through meaningful work.
Why is work so important in our mission?
We believe that dignified work is one of the most powerful tools for lifting people out of poverty. It brings purpose, confidence, and economic independence. But even more than that, we see work as a grace—a way for each person to reflect the creativity of God and to participate in building something good and meaningful. Inspired by Colossians 3:23—“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord”—we are especially committed to creating opportunities for people who are often overlooked, including adults with disabilities.
How does my purchase help artisans?
Your purchase provides our artisans with fair, upfront payment for their work, helping them earn a dignified living. It also
supports the growth of their businesses and contributes to long-term financial independence for their families and communities.
How are profits used?
All profits are reinvested into our mission—to identify new artisan partners, support material costs when needed, expand our
platform, and share the stories of these incredible makers. As a volunteer-run organization, every dollar goes further.
Where is Missionary Artisans expanding next?
We’re currently exploring new partnerships with Catholic artisans in Africa, Central and South America, and Southeast Asia. From vibrant African textiles to intricate Latin American handicrafts, our goal is to share the God-given talents of these artisans with
the world. Stay tuned for updates—and feel free to contact us if you know of a mission-driven project we should consider!
How long does shipping take, and where do you ship?
Orders are typically shipped from our Pittsburgh base within 3–5 business days, and you’ll receive tracking information once your order is on its way. We currently ship within the U.S.and hope to expand internationally in the future. As a new, volunteer-run organization operating part-time, we appreciate your patience and support as we grow!
What is your return policy?
Since our products are handmade and sourced from small artisan groups, we generally do not accept returns unless an item arrives damaged or defective. If there’s an issue with your order, please contact us within 7 days of receiving it.
